E10 petrol will become the default unleaded petrol sold on British forecourts from Wednesday 1 September. The fuel contains up to 10 per cent renewable ethanol, which is added to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help tackle climate change. This compares to the 5 per cent renewable ethanol in E5 petrol, which is the UK standard currently. It has now been introduced in the UK as part of a push to meet CO2 targets.
If your vehicle is not compatible with E10 petrol, you can continue to use E5, which will remain available at many petrol stations, including those Ascona Service Stations listed below.
What if I put E10 in by mistake?
If you accidentally use E10 fuel in a vehicle that is not compatible, it should not be a major problem. Make sure you fill up with the correct E5 petrol grade next time. However, the Government warns: “Prolonged use of E10 petrol in a non-compatible vehicle, however, may cause harm and is not recommended.”
Can I mix E10 and E5 petrol?
According to the Department for Transport you can if your vehicle is E10 compliant. Its guidance says: “If your vehicle is compatible with E10 petrol, there’s no reason you can’t mix the 2 grades of petrol. “It’s perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or fill up with E5 if E10 is not available.”
Which cars cannot use E10 fuel?
Most cars built between 2000 and 2010 are compatible, but there are some exceptions, including models from major brands such as Audi, Ford, Mercedes, Toyota and Volkswagen.
Older cars, including classic models, are more vulnerable to damage from the fuel.
